The Lodwar Regional Office of the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) joined the Turkana County Government and partners in Lodwar to commemorate the International Day of Older Persons.
The office serves the North Rift and Ateker region. It joined the State Department for Social Development and Echami-Aito, a women-led organisation in Turkana County. The event was supported by the Kenya Red Cross Society and HelpAge Kenya, and was attended by the Deputy Governor of Turkana County, H.E. Dr John Erus.
CUSTODIANS AND CARERS
In Turkana County older persons play an important role as custodians of culture, livestock knowledge and community peace. Many live in remote pastoral settlements with limited access to essential services, while also caring for grandchildren and facing the effects of recurrent drought and food insecurity. The theme of the commemoration highlights the need for stronger social protection, health and care services, and enabling environments that support healthy, secure and dignified ageing.
OFFICE COMMITMENT
The Lodwar Regional Office pledged to strengthen collaboration with the Turkana County Government, the National Government, civil society and development partners to promote the rights and participation of Special Interest Groups, including older persons. The Commission called for concerted action to ensure that older persons in Turkana can participate fully in community life and enjoy their rights and freedoms.
