The Malindi Regional Office of the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) joined the Kilifi County Older Persons Steering Committee and partners to commemorate the International Day of Older Persons. The commemoration was held at Bandari Salama in Kilifi South Sub-County under the theme Advancing Healthy Ageing and Older Persons’ Rights in Kenya: Coordinated Health, Social Protection and Community Action. Stakeholders called for healthcare, long-term care and social protection systems that respond to the realities of an ageing population.
HEALTH AND CARE
Discussions highlighted the growing burden of non-communicable diseases, gaps in access to quality healthcare, and the need for coordinated action by national and county governments, communities, civil society and the private sector.
Article 57 of the Constitution guarantees older persons the right to participate fully in society, live in dignity and respect, remain free from abuse, and receive reasonable care and assistance.
WHAT FOLLOWS
The Commission said it will continue to monitor and advise on the inclusion of the needs of older persons in national and county policies, programmes and budgets, and to work with county governments, communities and partners.
