The National Gender and Equality Commission convened a stakeholders’ meeting to deliberate on the need for an umbrella body for widowed persons in Kenya, bringing together organisations working on the rights of widows. The meeting examined the current status and coordination of widows’ organisations, the rationale for an umbrella body, the institutional and operational framework such a body would require, and the development of an operationalisation roadmap.

Participants also deliberated on the Widows Bill, 2026, and explored stronger coordination and advocacy mechanisms to advance the rights, dignity and socio-economic inclusion of widows across the country. The Commission remains committed to strengthening partnerships and supporting initiatives that promote equality, inclusion and the protection of the rights of widows, so that every widow in Kenya lives in dignity and security.
