Access to justice, public awareness, and environmental conservation were in focus as the National Gender and Equality Commission's (NGEC) Malindi Regional Office joined justice sector stakeholders during the Malindi Law Courts Open Day 2026, held under the theme, "Enhancing Access to Justice through Public Awareness and Justice."
The event brought together justice sector institutions, members of the Court Users Committee, and the public to promote greater understanding of legal rights, available redress mechanisms, and the role of justice institutions in safeguarding the rights and dignity of all persons.
Particular emphasis was placed on ensuring access to justice for women, children, persons with disabilities, older persons, minorities, marginalized communities, and other Special Interest Groups, including enhancing awareness of legal rights, improving access to redress mechanisms, and addressing barriers that hinder equal protection under the law.
As part of the programme, the Commission participated in a tree-planting exercise at Malindi GK Prison alongside members of the Court Users Committee and other stakeholders, contributing to the national tree-growing initiative and supporting the Presidential target of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.
The engagement underscored the link between inclusive governance, access to justice, and environmental sustainability, while reaffirming the Commission's commitment to advancing equality, freedom from discrimination, environmental stewardship, and collaborative partnerships that promote fair, responsive, and resilient communities.
