The National Counter Terrorism Centre has nominated the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) to the Security and Community Policing Working Group in Kitui County.
The nomination followed a letter from the Centre dated 21 August 2026. The Commission’s Kitui Regional Office took part in the working group meeting held at the San Marino Hotel in Kitui County.
The meeting was convened under the Kenya and European Union Partnership and within the framework of the National Strategy to Prevent and Counter Violent Extremism. It brought together stakeholders to deliberate on community policing, public safety and locally driven security strategies.
BEYOND SECURITY MEASURES The Commission’s position is that preventing violent extremism requires more than security interventions, and demands inclusive approaches that address discrimination, marginalisation, economic exclusion and other conditions that may increase vulnerability.
The Commission said women, youth, persons with disabilities, older persons, and minority and marginalised communities must be meaningfully represented in security planning, decision-making and implementation.
WHAT THE SEAT CARRIES
The Commission said its participation will help ensure that community policing structures recognise the different security needs and experiences of population groups.
It said its participation will also promote gender-responsive approaches, accessible reporting mechanisms and stronger community participation in preventing violence and building cohesive and resilient communities.
The Commission sits on the working group alongside the National Counter Terrorism Centre, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, the European Union in Kenya, the County Government of Kitui and other stakeholders.
