PRESS RELEASE ON ALLOCATION OF POLITICAL PARTY LIST SEATS

The National Gender and Equality Commission wishes to draw attention to the provisions of Article 90 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 regarding the election for the seats in parliament provided for under article 97(1) (c) and 98 (1) (b), (c) and (d) for the members of county assemblies under article 177 (1) (b) and (c).

Each political party participating in the August 8, 2017 General elections is required to nominate and submit a list of all persons who would stand elected if the party were to be entitled to seats provided under Article 90 within the time prescribed by national legislation.
Today Saturday June 24, 2017 is the deadline for submission of party lists. We wish to state the following:-

  1. We expect that political parties have fully complied with the Article 90 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, the Elections Act and the recent nominations and party regulations published by IEBC in submitting names of members who would qualify for nominations in the National Assembly, Senate and County Assemblies to represent special interest groups.
  2. We expect that IEBC will immediately publish all the lists received from political parties to facilitate dispute resolution within the 10 days provided by law. After dispute resolution, we expect that IEBC will gazette the final party lists which shall be closed for the term of the incoming parliament and county assemblies.
  3. The special seats are reserved for the Special Interest Groups and only bonafide members should be nominated.

The National Gender and Equality Commission will monitor this process keenly.
