Leading the Charge to End GBV Amid Alarming Rise in Femicide

The National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) has wrapped up its powerful advocacy campaign marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), which took place from November 25 to December 10.

Throughout the campaign, NGEC spearheaded awareness initiatives across Kenya, holding dialogues, radio programs, and webinars. Collaborating with local governments and key stakeholders, the Commission launched new policies to prevent GBV, including the creation of safe spaces and recovery centres for survivors.

However, the alarming rise in femicide, often perpetrated by intimate partners or family members, remains a pressing concern. In response, NGEC has called for men to take active roles in ending GBV, alongside advocating for stronger legal frameworks.

A defining moment of the campaign occurred on December 10, when peaceful protesters in Nairobi were met with a violent police response. NGEC condemned the excessive use of force and reiterated the importance of upholding the right to peaceful assembly.

As the campaign concludes, NGEC continues its commitment to eradicating GBV, stressing the urgency of ensuring that every woman and girl can live free from violence and fear.
