Kilifi County Takes a Bold Stand Against Gender-Based Violence with New 2024-2028 Policy

Kilifi County, Kenya – The Malindi Regional Office proudly participated in a significant event to mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), a global initiative aimed at raising awareness and combating the widespread issue of violence against women and girls. This year, Kilifi County hosted a series of events in collaboration with national stakeholders, non-state actors, and the local government, focusing on addressing GBV in all its forms.

The highlight of the day’s proceedings was the launch of the Kilifi County Anti- Gender-Based Violence Policy (2024- 2028), a strategic and comprehensive framework designed to tackle GBV in the region. This landmark policy aims to eradicate violence through a multi- pronged approach,              including prevention strategies, survivor support systems, and robust accountability mechanisms.

The Kilifi County Government, with the support of national and local organizations, emphasized the importance of a multisectoral response to GBV. “Together, we can create safe, inclusive spaces for everyone,” said a spokesperson from the County Government.

“This policy marks a major step toward ensuring that survivors receive the support they need while fostering an environment where perpetrators are held accountable.”

The Anti-GBV Policy (2024-2028) is a testament to the commitment of Kilifi County in addressing the root causes of GBV, promoting gender equality, and offering hope and healing to survivors.

The policy emphasizes a collaborative approach, engaging various sectors such as healthcare, law enforcement, education, and community-based organizations to create lasting change.

During the event, stakeholders from various sectors pledged their unwavering commitment to eradicating GBV and ensuring the safety of women and girls in the county. The launch of the policy serves as a call to action for all communities to work together in ending GBV and upholding the dignity and rights of every individual.

As part of the 16 Days of Activism, various educational activities, advocacy campaigns, and survivor-centered workshops were organized to engage the public, raise awareness, and encourage reporting of GBV incidents.
