NGEC lauds First Lady’s Campaign

NGEC Chairperson Winfred Lichuma has lauded First Lady Margaret Kenyatta for her national initiative to equip all the 47 counties with mobile clinics in order to take health services closer to the people dubbed ‘Beyond Zero Campaign’

Speaking in Maralal, Samburu County where she joined the First Lady who was donating a mobile clinic, Lichuma said the campaign would accelerate the pace of realizing of the millennium development goals by reducing the maternal and child mortality ratio which remains unacceptably high in Kenya. “The Beyond Zero Campaign is a great initiative whose outcome no doubt will see a reduction of maternal and child mortality rates” said Lichuma

The First Lady’s event coincided with the Commission’s public inquiry into child pregnancies in Samburu County. Lichuma said NGEC recognized access to efficient maternal health as a fundamental right provided for under Article 43 of the Kenya Constitution

She reiterated the Commission’s resolve to continue advocating for financing of substantive equality so that national and county budgets allocate resources to advance efficient maternal health care.
